I think just about everyone who knows me knows that I cannot wait to have a child.
Okay, okay. I'm still in my early twenties, and I am in no way ready to have children...but by the time I'm 30, I hope that I have a child (or that I have one on the way).
I know that I want at least one child, but who knows? Maybe I'll have two...or three. Either way, I know that it is crucial to find at a family-friendly company. I want to be able to take time off to spend with my child(ren), I want a company that will understand if I must leave early one day due to a soccer play-off or a play. Flexibility is key!
I suppose you could say loving children runs in my blood...my mother is a retired teacher, after all. For as long as I can remember I was an assistant in her classroom- from helping to plan projects to scrubbing the kitchens clean after the school year ended I worked right alongside her. She had the flexibility to be there for me when I was growing up. Field days, plays, games- you name it, she was there. Before deciding on a college, I loved the idea of finding a college with a strong education major program but due to the budget restrictions and laying off of teachers across the country I knew that teaching in an elementary school or middle school would be a career of passion, not necessarily practicality.
Years ago I began babysitting as a side job...when I moved out east though, I quickly realized that I loved spending time with kids mostly because it meant I could be a kid again! Not only that, but I think there is so much to be learned from kids.
Now that I've been babysitting for years, I have a group of families that I work for . I could not be more grateful for these families- over the years, they have inspired me, supported me, given me advice...they are truly remarkable. I only hope that I can be half the parent that these parents are.
